They are included in a Special Area of Conservation of 271.57 ha, which protects land in private ownership and state-owned nature reserve.〔(Lough Yganavan and Lough Nambrackdarrig SAC ), National Parks and Wildlife Service〕 The habitats include fixed dunes, a type of machair. Lough Nambrackdarrig and the southern half of Lough Yganavan were designated as National Nature Reserves in 1988 (areas in ha: 25.3 & 3.9).〔http://www.npws.ie/naturereserves/kerry/〕 ==Fauna== This is one of the areas in which the rare Kerry Slug and Natterjack Toad are known to occur.
